There is one hunting season that seems to get easily overlooked by hunters for a variety of reasons but is every bit as exciting as those sheds, gobblers or brook trout. What season am I talking about?

In my opinion, the best states to hunt for spring black bears are Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Yes, there are a lot more western states that allow you to hunt black bears in the spring, but, let’s face it: you have a limited amount of time, so why not go where the bear numbers are highest.
The study, which looked at everything from historic newspaper articles to more recent scientific studies, indicates that black bears in Nevada were once distributed throughout the state but subsequently vanished in the early s. Today, the bear population is increasing and rapidly reoccupying its former range due in part to the conservation and management efforts of NDOW and WCS.
Over the course of the study, black bears were captured both in the wild and at the urban interface in response to conflict complaints. The captured animals used in the study adult males and females only were evaluated for multiple physiological indicators including condition, sex, reproductive status, weight, and age, prior to being released.

Bears may den in a rock crevice, tree cavity, or under heavy brush or fallen tree. Since female bears generally give birth sometime in January or early February, a high-pitched squeal from the cubs may be audible if you are near a den. If anyone finds a bear den, DEC strongly urges the public to not approach or disturb the den, but simply to note the location and move away from the den site.

The brown bear Ursus arctos is a bear species found across Eurasia and North America. It is one of the largest living terrestrial members of the order Carnivora , rivaled in size only by its closest relative, the polar bear Ursus maritimus , which is much less variable in size and slightly bigger on average.
While the brown bear’s range has shrunk and it has faced local extinctions, it remains listed as a least concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN with a total population of approximately , As of [update] , this and the American black bear are the only bear species not classified as threatened by the IUCN. Many of the populations in the southern parts of Eurasia are highly endangered as well.
The brown bear is sometimes referred to as the bruin , from Middle English. This name originated in the fable History of Reynard the Fox translated by William Caxton from Middle Dutch bruun or bruyn , meaning brown the color. Brown bears are thought to have evolved from Ursus etruscus in Asia. Brown bears entered Europe about , years ago and North Africa shortly after. The species entered Alaska , years ago, though they did not move south until 13, years ago.
Several paleontologists suggest the possibility of two separate brown bear migrations: inland brown bears, also known as grizzlies , are thought to stem from narrow-skulled bears which migrated from northern Siberia to central Alaska and the rest of the continent, while Kodiak bears descend from broad-skulled bears from Kamchatka , which colonized the Alaskan peninsula. Brown bear fossils discovered in Ontario , Ohio , Kentucky and Labrador show that the species occurred farther east than indicated in historic records.
